Not everybody is perfect; everyone makes mistakes at certain things in our day to day doings. Web design is obviously not exempted. However, you can avoid these mistakes by noting some of the most common mistakes with web page design.
1.) Legibility Problems:
Let’s face it; at least once, you have visited a site where you can barely read what was written. The usual problem is that fonts are too small to even be read. Some are carry too much flair rendering the actual letters illegible. Finally, the letters sometimes seem to blend with the background making it very hard to read.
2.) Non-standard links:
Links; these clickable items have been the main navigational tool of the entire web. Simplicity and function is the key to making good links within a web page; always indicate if a link is existent within the page by either underlining or changing the font color of the link. It is best that both be used for links. Here’s an example of how a link should look like; Click here to go to this website. Another common problem is that sometimes, people fail to explain what a person will see on the other side of the link. This results to people simply avoiding the link because they are unsure if it would benefit them.
3.) Written web content:
Informative content for the web should always be short, to the point and answers users’ questions. Also make sure that you do not use made up terms; use common languages that can be understood by you and most specially, by the users.
4.) Forms:
In terms of websites that requires you to fill up forms, the most common annoyance user’s face is the fact that there simply is too many unnecessary questions. In addition, try to always make everything required present on the first page. This saves the user’s time which means they would not quit on completing the form midway.
5.) Contact information:
Simply put, there are certain websites that provide none, let alone little, contact information. The lesser a user can reach/contact a company or service provider, the less likely will a user work with the said company.
6.) Browser compatibility:
Not everyone uses the same browser; there’s a wide array of different browsers people use across the globe. To name a few, there’s Internet Explorer, AOL, Safari, Netscape, Firefox, and much more. There are many instances where in a certain website fails to work well with all of the major browsers. For example, a site appears perfectly fine on IE, while in Firefox, all the pictures fail to appear.
7.) Bad searches
Another of the great annoyances for all users is when something else appears after a particular search. It is time consuming to search for the right website through a list of other sites that are simply unrelated to your search other than the actual words you keyed in as search parameters. Make sure that you use distinct, clear, and concise words to define your website.
These are some of the many mistakes a web designer can make. You can avoid these by taking note of some of the most common mistakes.
